Trivkram Temple ( Chaitya) Osmanabad Maharashtra

Trivikram Temple is one of the oldest temple in India, located in 'Ter' village of Osmanabad district , Maharashtra, at a distance of only 22 km from Osmanabad city. During the time of Satavahana period, the area of this village was quite large and this city was counted among the major cities of India, Ter is mentioned in history as 'Tagar', this city also served as the Sub-capital of Satavahana kingdom. There is a very mysterious temple in the middle of Ter village which is dedicated to Lord Trivikram. This is mysterious because the construction of this temple is not like that of ordinary Hindu temples. Many historians like Cousins & Percy Braun. believe that it is an ancient Buddhist chaitya which was built in the fifth century CE.

This Chaitya was completely constructed with bricks, and has been plastered from the top and this was India's first example of this type of architecture, another example of this is also seen in 'Cherjala' in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. These two temples were once Buddhist Chaitya Griha, later converted into Hindu temples. Only two such temple Chaitya griha have been found in India, which is why they are quite important in themselves.

The main temple is divided into two divisions: a main 'Garbhagriha' and a 'Sabhamandapa' in front which was built about 600 years after the main temple. The main sanctum sanctorum is 4 meters long and 4 meters wide, the sanctum sanctorum wall is 1.25 meters wide, the shape of the sanctum looks like elephant's back, and this figure is called 'Gajaprashtha' temple, especially in the Buddhist Caves appear in we can see this example. The total height of the main sanctum sanctorum is 10 meters.

To install the idol of Lord Vishnu (Trivikram), the inner stupa has been uprooted.
