The Marathwada region of Maharashtra may be a backward area, but the fort of this place is very popular among tourists, most of the forts in this region are the Land fort or Ground Fort, which is known for its distinct and versatile architectural style.Udgir Fort ,Kandahar Fort, Naldurg Fort,Paranda and Ausa Fort are prominent.
In this blog, we are going to travel Ausa fort, Ausa is a tehsil situated at a distance of 18 km from Latur city of Maharashtra, which is about 1500 years old. Balaji temple and ancient Kharoshthi Buddhist caves are one to see in the city of Ausa, but Ausa is particularly known for its fort. This fort is a Maharashtra state protected monument. Thousands of tourists and history lovers come here to see it.
In the year 1466, Mohammad Ganwan was chosen as the head of the Bahmani kingdom and Mohammad Ganwan completed the construction of this fort during his reign. This fort is spread over an area of 24 acres and has made a total of seven Main Gates Mahadwaras to enter the fort. The trench is built around 40 meters wide and 4 meters high, the trench has 3 large water well which is the main source of water and it was full of water throughout the year.
The name main gate to enter inside the fort is 'Ahshama' gate after entering it and there are total six gates. Inside the fort is the Rani Mahal which is now almost destroyed. Although the Nizam's rules was on Marathwada, but the responsibility of protecting the Nizam's kingdom was on the British army.Colonel Middows was the chief military officer of this region and the architecture of this bastion like house inside the fort was built by the British officer Colonel Midoz Taylor for his stay.
A mosque has also been built inside the fort, with it, Ishratmahal, Lalmahal, Panimahal etc. are the major buildings. There are many cannons on the bastions of the fort, among them, on the eastern bastion's cannon is the biggest of the fort, which is two and a half meters long and it is made from mixture of five metal, Mohammad bin Nizam Hussain Shah's name has been carved on this cannon. The water system in the fort was built with three main step well named as Tawa, Bowl and Moon step well, out of which the Tava well is very large, this well is 4 storeys and step has also been arranged. Water from these stepwells was transported to every corner of the fort by earthen pipes.
The fort has double fortifications to protect the fort, the inner guard wall is higher than the outer protection wall. A total of 23 bastions had been built on the outer fortifications wall, where the soldiers was kept a close watch on the enemies, as well. Great cannon have also been placed here, it was always ready to attack the enemy, except for a few small big skirmishes, there was no major war on this fort.
The repair work of the fort was done during the time of 'Murtaza Nizam' and an inscription of it is also carved on the western wall of the fort.
